The Polish Language Facts

Polish (Polski)  is the official language of Poland and is spoken by most of the 38 million inhabitants of Poland (census 2002). Whilst most Poles speak standard Polish, there are several dialects within the Polish language. These are easily understandable to native Polish speakers as they are based mostly on regional pronunciation and vocabulary changes.

Native speakers of Polish can also be found in Western Belarus, Ukraine and Eastern Lithuania and because of emigration various periods, millions of Polish-speakers can also be found in countries such as Ireland, Australia, Israel, Brazil, Canada, the United Kingdom, United States, etc. The estimated number of Poles who live beyond the borders of Poland is 10 million; with about 50 million people worldwide naming Polish as their mother tongue.

Turnover Soars 65% at Family Business

Thatcham-based language services company Prestige Network is celebrating financial success with the announcement that the family-run business’s turnover has soared 65% in the last 12 months.

They now employ 25 staff and 5,000 specialist language freelancers based all over the UK, who speak and translate more than 400 languages. Prestige Network caters for language and communications needs in the private and public sector (including the NHS, local government departments, charities, the police and other public organisations).

Despite worldwide economic gloom and doom, the company – run by brother and sister Shohreh Fleming and Shawn Khorassani, along with Shohreh’s husband Anthony – has seen its turnover to the end of the last financial year soar to a phenomenal £3 million.

Shohreh said: “Our staff are invaluable to us, so we ensure it’s a happy place to work. It’s a great pleasure to ensure employment during difficult economic times.”
